Germany’s largest energy provider Eon aims to avoid price increases for consumers this year, Eon Energy Germany chief executive Filip Thon said on Saturday.

“At Eon, we will keep electricity and gas prices stable for our existing customers this year,” Thon said in a statement seen by dpa.

Thon said the company was looking ahead. “In concrete terms, that means we have bought electricity and gas over the longer term and have already covered energy demand for our customers in full this year,” he said.

This also applied to primary customers, he said, saying the company was the main primary provider to millions, even in times of difficulty.

Thon noted that grid charges had also been set for the whole of 2026, but he said that short-term government regulatory interventions in response to geopolitical developments could occur.

No reliable predictions could be made in this case, he said.

Over the longer term, Eon is expecting prices to be higher than before the Iran war.

Thon called for a cut in Germany’s tax on electricity, saying this was the only way to accelerate an affordable energy transition. The taxes have been imposed to fund the transition to renewables.

Eon has 11.3 million electricity and 2.3 million gas customers in Germany.

The average price of electricity to households is the same as at the beginning of the year at €0.316 ($0.371) per kilowatt-hour, according to comparison portal Verivox.

Gas prices rose to around €0.111 from €0.099 at the beginning of the year.

Verivox spokesman Thorsten Storck said the effects of the Iran war on electricity and gas prices had been limited, in contrast to the effects on petrol and diesel. But Verivox was expecting prices to rise, especially for new customers, he said.
